Docker Desktop delivers the speed, choice and security you need for designing and delivering these containerized applications on your desktop. Kitematic connects directly do a running instance of Docker and controls it via the Docker Remote API. Which platforms does Kitematic support? Right now Kitematic only works on Mac OS X. That said, Windows is on the short-term roadmap (coming soon!) and a Linux version is in high demand. Why does Kitematic collect usage analytics and bug reports? Kitematic is a popular Docker GUI management platform that is available for Ubuntu, macOS, and Windows OS. However other distros such as CentOS, OpenSUSE, Fedora, RHEL, etc can build it from source, however, that is not a feasible option for beginners. Thus, instead of that, I tried to bring one easy way to install the Kitematic rpm package on CentOS 7/8, AlmaLinux, OpenSUSE, and others using Alien package convertor.

In my testing, it worked perfectly, thus, here are the steps which I followed to have this docker management platform on my RPM-based Linux system.

Install Kitematic RPM package in CentOS 7/8 Linux

1. Open command terminal & run update

First thing, just run the system update command to rebuild the repo cache and get the latest state of installed packages on the system.

2. Enable EPEL release repository on Centos 7 or 8

We need an Alien package converter that is available in the Epel repository to install, thus the next step will be to enable that on our RPM-based Linux system.

3. Install Alien package converter on CentOS

The next step is to use the below command for the installation of the Alien package-

4. Download the Kitematic Debian package

As there are no RPM binaries are available to download, thus we will get the one available for Ubuntu on the Github page- https://github.com/docker/kitematic/releases/

5. Convert Kitematic Deb to RPM package

Now, the main step of this article is the conversion of the downloaded deb package of Kitematic to RPM.

As what we download goes to the Downloads folder, thus switch to that.

Extract Deb file:

We will use this command syntax- sudo alien --to-rpm file.deb

The command to convert will be like this-

6. Install the converted RPM package

Now, it’s time to install the RPM package we got after converting the Kitematic Deb file.

7. Run Kitematic on CentOS

Click on Activities, go to all Application, and search for it. As the icon appears click to run it.

If you want then Connect to Docker HUB or else do it later.

Finally, here is the graphical user interface of Kitematic to manage all machines installed on Docker running on CentOS server or Desktop.

This entry is to get quickly started with Docker Community Edition for Windows 10 Professional. This is not a detailed Docker Guide, but highlights the important ones.

Download the Docker Desktop for Windows 10 Professional using the link below.

After installation, 3 programs will be installed:

  • Docker Desktop – This is the main application to use
  • Docker Kitematic – Currently in Alpha mode as of July 2020. Optionally, you can use your Docker Hub account, sign-up first if you do not have an account yet.
  • Docker Quickstart Terminal

Windows 10 Professional

Note: You may need to do other things other than the details below, but i recommend do the step below before doing anything else, as this part is quite troublesome if it doesn’t work properly.

Hyper-V features should be enabled before working with Docker Desktop for Windows 10 Professional. To enable Hyper-V features, run Windows Powershell as Administrator, then type in:

Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V -All

The installation will take a few minutes, then it might require a restart before it can work. After the restart, you should be able to run the Docker Desktop successfully.

Docker Kitematic

This application gets you onboard to Docker real fast, it hides all those technical stuff under the hood. I recommend this if you wanted to play around with Docker. Still, knowing the details is important, so do not rely on Kitematic very much.

Each Docker Images can have different kinds of options. You can always use the default one of course, but try to explore the tags if you are looking for specific version (that’s the 3 dots button before the “Create” button).

Explore the “Settings” of the image to see some parameters that you might want to know or configure such as environment variables, port, network and volumes. As an example, i check the port used by the container:
